The Great Escape

The Great Escape

What are “escape the room” games and why are they becoming so popular around the country? They’re team-centered games where a group of people is locked in a room (but don’t worry, due to safety regulations you can always get out if you need to) and have to solve puzzles and hunt down clues in order to escape within the time limit. They’re sometimes described as the ultimate team-building experience. Here: this video explains it quite well (it specifically refers to a room escape game in Seattle, but the principles apply to all escape room activities). (more…)

The Great American Turkey Trot

The Great American Turkey Trot

Come November 24th, all across the nation, people will be thinking about turkey, and not even just because of Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey trots, often a 5K run, have become a popular activity for many on Thanksgiving day, including many residents of Brandon, FL. While the turkey is in the oven roasting, participants are outside making their way to the finish line. These races are definitely best run before dinner and the turkey coma that follows. In today’s blog post, we have some info on training to run a turkey trot, as well as where they are being held. Ready, set, read!

Training for a Run

Remember that running a race is supposed to be fun. It’s not solely about how fast you can run it. Safety is a factor as well, so better safe than sorry. Train so you can safely put the pedal to the metal. When training for a race, especially longer ones like marathons, people should do the following, according to the UCSF Medical Center:

— Have been running for at least a year

— Be able to cover 15 – 25 miles a week comfortably

— Have previous experience running one or two 5K races

While you don’t have to have a this type of experience to run a 5K turkey trot, knowing how much distance you can comfortably cover in a certain amount of time can give you confidence as you run and help you do your best.

Training is important to a successful, injury free marathon. Runner’s World offers a variety of training programs for various skill levels. Check out this list of marathon training plans and choose one that will work for you.

Where the Races Are

Running in the USA is a great site for information about all things running. It includes a searchable database of upcoming races. This page lists November races within about 25 miles of Tampa, FL.  However, if you are looking for a turkey trot specifically, check out these two races: Fishhawk Turkey Trot, which benefits Seeds of Hope, or the Tampa Bay Times Turkey Trot, which features five different races.

Even if you are not a runner yourself, you can participate by walking in one, volunteering to help speed the runners on their way, or simply by being there to support a good cause. We want to wish everyone in our apartment community a happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for reading the Providence Lakes blog today!
